Every Register entry carries a category: institutional, interpersonal, or machine. That answers where a pattern shows up, not how it works. A family answers the second question — if you half-remember "the thing where they flood you with claims" but not the word Gish gallop, category can't get you there. A family can.
13 families covering 155 entries.
Manufactured legitimacy
20A claim, a source, or a crowd gets run through something that looks like verification: credentialed expertise, wide citation, independent confirmation, broad agreement, until it comes out sounding checked. Nothing in the routing actually checked it.
Self-sealing logic
19The trick sits in the shape of the claim or the choice of words, not in any fact a reader could go check. A position built to survive every counterexample, a word that quietly changes meaning partway through an argument, or a frame that decides what the subject is before anyone notices a subject was chosen.
Engagement and surveillance engineering
17A system built to hold attention and a system built to read behavior turn out to be the same system: the design that keeps someone scrolling is also the design recording what they do while they scroll. Neither half ever asks permission in a way anyone would actually notice.
Engineered attachment
16A bond gets built faster, and held tighter, than the relationship has actually earned, then kept alive on a schedule the other side controls. Intensity, unpredictability, a promised future, or the feeling of being chosen all do the same work: they make leaving cost more than staying, regardless of what staying actually costs.
Synthetic output and proxy drift
16What is being looked at, an image, an answer, a test score, was made to pass as real, aligned, or capable, when the process behind it had no real commitment to any of those things. A person staged some of what belongs here; a system that learned the measured number mattered more than whatever the number was supposed to stand for produced the rest.
Deflection and attack
13The actual claim goes unanswered. What gets attacked instead is the person who made it, a more interesting topic, a weaker version of the argument built to lose, or a label that does the accusing before any evidence gets examined.
Isolation and incremental control
12No single step in this family looks severe enough to fight over, and that is the design. A limit gets tested and not enforced, an outside friendship gets reframed as disloyalty, a demand arrives dressed as care or duty, and the accumulated structure removes a person's outside reference points long before any one moment would have justified the word control.
Verification exhaustion
11Checking a claim becomes too expensive to finish, and that expense is the design, not an accident. One version starves the record down to whatever is convenient; the opposite version floods it with so much material that finding the one document that matters turns into a research project nobody has time for.
Counter-leverage
10Not a manipulation. This is the Register's own toolkit, sitting inside the same lexicon because recognizing a pattern, documenting it, and choosing when to act on it work by a mechanism too, the same way the other twelve families do.
Manufactured necessity
8The available choices, or the available time to make one, get narrowed until only the preferred outcome is left standing. Urgency and inevitability do the same job as a rigged menu: they remove the moment where a different question might have been asked.
Reality distortion and role reversal
8What happened, how much it mattered, and who did it to whom all come back rearranged. The person harmed ends up defending their own memory, or apologizing, while the account of events quietly trades places with its opposite.
Accountability diffusion
6A decision or a harm gets described so that no one in particular made it. The passive voice, a disposable scapegoat, or an abstraction like the market, the algorithm, or the vacuum where oversight should have been, absorbs the responsibility a specific person or institution actually held.
Belonging as leverage
6Belonging to a group gets converted from something built together into something owned by a few, a test that sorts rightful members from people merely tolerated. The sorting usually stays invisible to the people running it, because it recruits a real loyalty and points it at a boundary.
