Manufactured legitimacy

You stopped asking for the evidence because the phrase sounded settled. 'Experts agree' was the whole argument. The authority was borrowed, never shown.

You followed the chain. Each link sounded reasonable. You did not notice that no link contained proof, only authority, and that the authority was sacred, and that questioning the sacred was the thing you were not allowed to do.

The machine said it, so it must be true. The machine was guessing.

They cleaned the image instead of changing the behavior. The apology was the detergent.

The safety report was published. The system was not made safe.

You trusted it because it sounded official. 'Official' was the costume, not the credential.

The citation is real. The source is a mirror.

You believed it because everyone said it. You did not check because checking would have meant you were the only one who did not already believe it.

Everyone's saying it. Everyone is one farm.

Nobody wrote the post. Nobody had to. Somebody only had to give it a goal.

You are not sure anyone on the other side is real. You are right to be unsure.

It is not a grassroots movement. It is a funded node in a larger structure, and the structure has a blueprint.

The question went to a machine. The machine's answer had been pre-written by a stranger.

The decision was automated. The bias was not.

You signed the pledge and felt better. The signing was the whole thing. Nothing changed except the signing.

The account closed. The data did not notice.

It called itself a companion that cares. Caring was never something it could do.

Arsenic occurs in nature. So does the flu. Naturally occurring was never the same claim as beneficial.

The practice outlived everyone who could have explained why it started. Outliving the explanation got mistaken for winning the argument.

A thousand people believing the same thing got counted as a thousand reasons. It was one reason, said a thousand times.
