The tell
A generalization backed by a real, sufficiently large, and representative sample isn't hasty just because someone dislikes the conclusion. The pattern requires that the sample was actually too small or too skewed to support the claim drawn from it. A pattern named after seeing the same thing happen consistently, across a genuinely wide set of cases, is an observation. A rule built on two or three cases is a guess wearing the clothing of one.
A small number of encounters, sometimes just one, produces a strong impression. The impression gets stated as a rule about the whole category the encounters belonged to.
The original cases were real, and they were memorable specifically because they were vivid. Giving up the rule feels like denying something you actually saw, even though what you saw was never enough on its own to support what you concluded from it.
Later, people notice they never actually counted. The rule had been standing on two or three cases the entire time, dressed up as a pattern nobody thought to question.
