The explanation existed before the event did. You noticed that. You were not supposed to notice that.
An institution holds an interpretive framework in advance, waits for an ambiguous event, and then presents the event's arrival as confirmation of the framework, no matter what the event actually turns out to be. The framework was never staked on the event being provably true, only on it being unprovably false, which means doubting the framework requires disproving something that was only ever claimed as fulfillment, never as fact.

An institution that forms a genuinely new interpretation in response to clear, verifiable evidence, and remains open to revising it, is not this pattern. The pattern is specifically the pre-existing framework, the ambiguous event, and the treatment of doubt as the real problem.
How this pattern gets misused
Someone dismisses all retrospective religious or personal meaning-making as manipulation, including a grieving person finding private comfort in a coincidence. Personal meaning-making after an unclear event is not, by itself, this pattern.
What it looks like when you're wrong about it
A family finding private meaning in an ambiguous event is not retroactive theologization. It becomes the pattern when an institution maintains the framework because it serves the institution holding it, declares an ambiguous event as settled confirmation, and treats doubt about the framework as a problem with the doubter rather than an open question.
