Where an idea came from is a different question from whether it's true. The two got merged, and only one of them got an answer.
A claim gets judged by its origin instead of its content. Something is accepted because it comes from a respected source, or rejected because it comes from a discredited one, and either way the actual argument never gets examined on its own terms. The origin might be described with total accuracy. It still isn't evidence about whether the claim itself is true.

You raise a study’s current funding, or a method’s specific and still-unresolved flaw, and someone waves it off as a genetic fallacy. It isn’t one. The genetic fallacy is judging a claim by where it came from instead of what it currently says. Raising an origin that bears on reliability right now, and then actually checking the argument too, is due diligence borrowing the fallacy’s name without doing the fallacy’s work.

The tell
Origin can be genuinely relevant when it bears on reliability right now, not just on history. A study's current funding, an author's undisclosed present conflict of interest, or a method's known and still-unaddressed flaw are legitimate grounds for scrutiny. The pattern is specifically judging a claim by its origin instead of its current merits. If the origin is offered as a reason to skip checking the merits at all, that's the fallacy. If it's offered alongside a real check of the merits, it's due diligence.
A claim's origin, who first said it, what movement it's associated with, what its inventor also believed, enters the conversation. The origin is often accurately described.
A troubling origin is often real, and pretending it doesn't exist feels dishonest. Separating that history from the present question takes a deliberate second step the origin story doesn't invite you to take.
Later, people notice the claim was never actually tested. Its history was, extensively, and the history got mistaken for the test.
How this pattern gets misused
Someone calls any mention of a claim's history or origin a genetic fallacy, even when the origin is directly relevant, like a study's funding source when the funder has a documented financial stake in the result.

You stopped asking for the evidence because the phrase sounded settled. 'Experts agree' was the whole argument. The authority was borrowed, never shown.
