Purity framing

You felt virtuous because the group was pure. You did not notice that the purity was measured by who was missing.

Also known as Othering / purity spiral

A movement defines its good in-group by naming who must be excluded, distrusted, or purged. The leader benefits because belonging becomes conditional on obedience. The cost is that disagreement stops being disagreement and becomes contamination, something to be cleansed, not answered.

How to recognize it

You felt virtuous because the group was pure. You did not notice that the purity was measured by who was missing. The missing people were not gone because they left. They were gone because they disagreed. The disagreement was the contamination. The cleansing was the belonging.

What to ask

What it looks like when you’re wrong about it

A group can have real membership standards and boundaries. A church that asks members to affirm a creed is not purity framing. The pattern requires that virtue is defined mainly by exclusion and that ordinary disagreement is treated as moral contamination requiring removal, not engagement.

How this pattern gets misused

Someone calls any membership standard or boundary 'purity framing' to avoid accountability. The vocabulary becomes a shield against criticism: any rule becomes contamination.

What it looks like when you're wrong about it

A group can have real membership standards. It's purity framing when virtue is defined mainly by exclusion and ordinary disagreement is treated as moral contamination. A church that asks members to affirm a creed is not purity framing; a movement that purges dissenters as 'impure' is.
