Peter Popoff
Faith healer, Word of Faith minister
The claim
Popoff claimed God revealed the names, addresses, and illnesses of audience members during live healing crusades. He called out specific medical conditions and personal details as proof of divine knowledge.
1980s
The exposure
In 1986, James Randi and the Committee for the Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal intercepted radio transmissions showing Popoff's wife Elizabeth fed him names, addresses, and medical information through a concealed earpiece from backstage. Randi played the intercepted audio on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.
Sources
- James Randi, CSICOP investigation (1986)
Radio intercepts captured Popoff receiving personal information from his wife via a wireless earpiece during "prophetic" healing segments.
- The Tonight Show, Carson/Randi segment
Randi played intercepted audio on national television, demonstrating the fraud to a mainstream audience.
The pattern
Cold reading augmented by technology, framed as divine revelation. The audience's emotional investment in the miracle prevents them from questioning the mechanism.
Aftermath
Popoff filed for bankruptcy in 1987. He returned to television ministry in 2005, selling "miracle spring water" and resuming faith healing performances. His ministry continues to operate.
